Incumbent Del. James Moylan and former U.S. Attorney for Guam and Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Alicia G. Limtiaco will face off in November following Saturday night’s Primary Election results.
Limtiaco ran unopposed on the Democrat ballot, while Moylan contended with former senator Mary Camacho Torres for the Republican delegate nomination.
According to unofficial election results from the Guam Election Commission early Sunday morning, Moylan received some 60.1% of the votes, capturing 4,928 voters. Torres captured nearly 40% of voters, totaling 3,258 ballots cast in her name.
Limtiaco received 9,876 votes on the Democratic ballot. That was 99.18% of votes cast in her uncontested primary, with 82 voters selecting to write in a candidate.
In a statement following his win in the Republican primary, Moylan called for a unified Republican push with the General Election looming just three months away.
“The primary is behind us, and there is far more that unites us than divides us,” he said. “I welcome the opportunity to work with Mary and Republicans across our island as we advance ideas that strengthen Guam.”
He also thanked Camacho Torres for a “hard-fought campaign.”
“Public service is never easy, and I commend Mary, her family, her volunteers, and everyone who stood with her throughout this election. We may have competed in this primary, but we share a love for Guam,” the incumbent said.
Following Sunday morning’s results, Torres said that while the outcome was not how the campaign hoped it would be, her campaign’s beliefs do not change because of it.
“We began this race with a simple belief: No family should be priced out of the island they call home. Our families deserve security, our children deserve opportunity, and all of us deserve an island that is safe, strong, and free,” she said in a statement. “That belief does not change because of tonight’s result. The stories and struggles shared with us throughout this campaign are real, and they deserve to remain at the center of the work ahead.”
Earlier in the night, the University of Guam Business and Public Administration Exit Poll of 600 voters on Guam favored Moylan to win, reporting that 56% of the sampled voters wanted the incumbent to stay.
Final, unofficial results from GEC were released just before 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. Results are expected to be ratified once the commission reconvenes on Aug. 15.
